The Dog Food Recall 2012 Continues to Expand. I know of 12 brands of pet food that have been voluntarily recalled since the end of November, 2011. Some of these are very popular brands.
We don’t know how many pets have been infected by salmonella poisoning. According to the FDA there have been at least 14 people infected in this latest outbreak.
Apparently, there was a 6 month old baby who almost died from this poisoning. The mother had fed her dog from an infected bag of food. Without washing her hands, she handled her baby. I’m sure that most people do not feel compelled to wash their hands after feeding their pet.
Because of this incident, the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has become involved in this matter.
The scary thing is that these infections have spread to 9 different states. There is no way to be sure how many other states may be involved.
This food was manufactured in early December, 2011, 6 months ago. So probably most of this infected food has been purchased by the consumer.
Yesterday, I wrote a post entitled, “Diamond Dog Food Recall 2012.” As of yesterday, 7 vendors have voluntarily recalled their pet products in the last month. The latest was yesterday when Solid Gold recalled some of their food.
This information was provided by a post from Dog Food Advisor, entitled “Dog Food Recalls.” The post lists pet food recalls going back to October, 2009. I encourage you to review the entire post.
Here is a partial quote:
Dog food recalls are vital to maintaining a safe food supply for our pets. They can be conducted in one of three ways… by a pet food company voluntarily, at the specific request of the Food and Drug Administration or by legal authority.
Recalls are almost always voluntary. Only rarely does the FDA actually request a dog food recall.

So how can we protect ourselves and our pets?
My answer is to be proactive. I can’t say this strongly enough. I’m sure we all love our dogs and cats.
So why take a chance dealing with any vendor who has had its pet products recalled? Why not purchase your pet food from a vendor you trust completely? One that has never had any of its products recalled.
Why not buy the best quality dog food which can be purchased at a very reasonable cost. Don’t find yourself a victim of the dog food recall 2012.
