A Vegan Cat Diet – Is It Healthy for our Cats?

A Vegan Cat Diet – Is that healthy for our cats?  For that matter, is any cat vegetarian diet acceptable?  I would love to hear your comments.

There are several websites and articles on the internet that support this type of diet.  Some vegan cat diet websites have actually changed their complete support of this type of diet.

My feeling is that this type of diet is not good for our cats.  Cats are carnivores.  Their dietary needs can only be satisfied by eating animal tissue.  They find the nutrients they need by eating meat.

If they don’t get the meat they need in their food, they will find it by eating small rodents and birds.

Some cat food manufacturers that produce a vegan food make the statement that its food does not adequately provide the protein the cat needs.

In my opinion, a vegan cat diet is not properly balanced nutritionally.  It does not provide the proper cat food nutrition.

I read an article that discusses a vegan cat diet.  Its more of a discussion on this subject.  It’s calledCan A Cat Be Healthy on a Vegan Diet? from Paws and Effect.

Here is a quote from the article:

Dear Most Esteemed and Knowledgeable Kitties:

I recently heard on the radio that Ellen DeGeneres is coming out with a line of vegan cat food. Is that even a healthy possibility for our cats? I thought they naturally ate meat proteins.

Siouxsie: After all four of us (that would be the three of us cats and Mama too) went “WHAAAAT?!?” when we heard that Ellen’s pet food company is coming out with a line of vegan cat foods, we did some research to verify this fact. It seems that this tidbit has been reported in more than one place, so we’re reasonably certain there’s some truth to it.

Thomas: But Ellen isn’t the first person to develop a line of vegan cat foods. Apparently there’s a fairly decent niche business in the vegan pet food market. We even found a website that sells only vegan dog and cat foods.

Dahlia: We know quite a few vegan humans, and we understand and respect the health, spiritual and political reasons for their choice to embrace an animal product-free lifestyle. But the fact of the matter is that while most humans can live well on a vegetarian or vegan diet, cats can’t — no matter what PETA or the celebrity talking-head of the week says.

The complete article can be found here.

This article tends to argue that this type of diet for our cats is not healthy.

I would like to know your opinion on the topic of a vegan cat diet.  Some of you may be feeding your cat a vegan diet.  Have you observed a long term effect of the diet?  Thanks for your input.
